Varieties of New Media 34-51
Web activity is enhanced by the presence of the internet which serves as a rich source of information, perhaps one of the richest sources of information today. The internet has also changed the way that we communicate and exchange information between one another. The advantages of the internet itself outweigh its disadvantages, making it a useful source of information in the long run.
The advantages include the fact that the Internet is always readily available to people of all types. A simple device such as a smartphone can allow a person to access the Internet without reliance upon a computer. Just from the convenience of his/her smartphone, literary thousands of information such as digital books, educational videos and study questions are available to a scholar. The other advantage of the Internet is that it has plenty of real-time information, unlike books which sit in the library. In this case, the Internet can be deemed as a well-stocked library of current information.
The internet however, faces challenges in terms of privacy and the unwanted access of personal information. There are thousands of instances where people have lost their money or have been impersonated because of the prevalence of the internet. Hackers are literally everywhere on the Internet, and it wouldn’t take them much thought to reconsider their actions whenever they get a potential loophole. Cyber bullying is also becoming common on social media sites which have showed up as a result of the internet, and this affects victims self-esteem.

All in all, the internet has brought more good than harm. The ability to sit down in the comfort of your home and have video conferences with colleagues. Besides, buying goods over the internet is a luxury that never existed in the early 19th century.
